NAME

  • Ph.D. Aeronautics, California Institute of Technology, 1988
  • M.S. Aeronautics, California Institute of Technology, 1983
  • B.Sc. Aeronautics, Imperial College London, U.K., 1983
  • ACGI, City and Guilds of London Institute, U.K., 1982

Anthony Waas comes from the University of Michigan where he was professor of aerospace engineering and of mechanical engineering, and the Felix Pawlowski collegiate chair professor. He has been named the new chair of the William E. Boeing Department of Aeronautics & Astronautics. His term will begin in early 2015. He will also hold the Boeing-Egtvedt Chair.

His research focuses on developing lighter aerospace and automotive structures using a variety of structural designs and materials to improve manufacturability, damage tolerance and structural stability and integrity. He uses analytical, experimental and computational methods to understand how multi-material structures like fiber reinforced laminates, high-temperature use structures and textile composites respond to external environments. His work also explores how the construction and composite characters in nature can improve synthetic structures.

Anthony is the PI and co-PI of research grants from NASA, AFOSR, ARO, Department of Energy and other US government agencies, and from industry. He serves as a consultant for corporations in the automotive and aerospace industries and recently consulted at The Boeing Company in connection with the 787 Dreamliner. He has authored and co-authored over 200 scientific journal papers, 250 conference papers, served as the editor and co-editor of several books and book chapters, and holds 2 patents.
