Research focus: engineering and health, health innovation, biophotonics, medical devices, translational health devices, team scienceSoyoung Kang received her Ph.D. from the University of Washington. In addition to teaching, she serves as the executive director of Engineering Innovation in Health, a year-long program that partners engineering students with health care professionals to look at unmet health needs holistically and develop technical solutions to pressing health challenges.

Research focus: computer science educationKevin Lin received his B.A. and M.S. degrees in computer science from UC Berkeley where he coordinated large-scale introductory undergraduate courses. As a head teaching assistant for three introductory programming courses enrolling over 1,000 students each, he managed roughly 40 to 100 teaching assistants per semester and introduced new pedagogies to improve the learning experience both inside and outside the classroom. Kevin plans to develop programs that broaden participation and improve retention in classrooms of all sizes.

Research focus: human-robot interaction, estimation, optimizationJohn Raiti has has designed, implemented and tested web interfaces for a variety of robots, including the NASA Robonaut (R2). In addition to teaching university-level courses for the past 15 years, John has developed human-robot interaction projects and novel robot applications for industry and partners such as the NASA Johnson Space Center.
Julian Yamamura

Research focus: construction materials, construction engineeringJulian Yamamura joins CEE after receiving his Ph.D. from the department. As a doctoral student, he demonstrated his teaching skills as an instructor of undergraduate courses focused on construction materials. Julian plans to continue teaching design and construction of temporary structures, project estimating and scheduling and modern technology use in heavy civil construction, and hopes to increase the visibility and interest in these specialty fields.
