PEERs Seminar

The PEERs Seminar is offered every spring as ENGR 401: Leadership Development to Promote Equity in Engineering Relationships. The course enlists engineering students’ energy, creativity, social conscience, and on-the-ground perspectives in improving the diversity environment in the UW College of Engineering. Students explore topics such as diversity in science and engineering, impact of unconscious bias, community engagement, leadership, etc. This course fulfills the University’s Diversity and Individual & Society graduation distribution requirements. A sample course syllabus with suggested readings can be found here.

In the final project for the class, students share what they have learned with the broader engineering community. The first few years students answered the question “What might our engineering peers need to know from this class to make the engineering environment more inclusive and welcoming?” in their final projects. More recently, students using their final projects to pitch a feasible program or small environmental change at UW in the College of Engineering that would create an inclusive culture in engineering.

These presentations are the basis of presentations given by PEERs Leaders at conferences, in classrooms, and to various groups and programs across campus.
