Charles Marcus joined the UW as the Boeing Endowed Professor of Materials Science & Engineering and a professor of physics in April 2023. Among other prestigious academic and professional positions, he was the Villum Kann Rasmussen Professor at the Niels Bohr Institute, director of the Center for Quantum Devices, and director of Microsoft Quantum–Copenhagen.
Marcus’s research interests focus on condensed matter physics and quantum information and coherence. At the UW, his laboratory will explore large-scale interconnected quantum and topological systems for the fundamental understanding of complex quantum materials and applications in quantum information. He has received numerous awards and was the first non-Dane to be awarded the H.C. Ørsted Gold Medal in Physics. He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences.
