If you are a current first-year Engineering Undeclared student who will be finished with the placement requirements before the end of your first year, the information on this page is for you!
Frequently asked questions
No, the placement process occurs once per year in the summer. For the majority of ENGRUDs, placement is still the pathway they will take into an engineering major. Once finished with the placement requirements students should continue working on overlapping enrollment requirements for majors of interest.
However, if you have significant advanced college credits that satisfy the application requirements for the capacity constrained pathway and are on track to complete the enrollment requirements by the end of your first year, you may choose to apply to one or more engineering majors via this alternate pathway.
The capacity constrained admission pathway is intended primarily for prospective transfer students or current UW students who are not ENGRUDs and discovered an interest in engineering after they started at the UW. That said, ENGRUDs may apply if they are eligible. This pathway has more robust eligibility requirements, different application timelines, and a different application portal than the placement process. Admission to a major through this route is not guaranteed.
Being admitted to a major through the capacity constrained pathway would mean that you are able to start the junior-level curriculum in your second year at the UW. If you are not admitted to a major through the capacity constrained admission process, you will remain an ENGRUD through the end of your first year and go through the placement process in the summer, and would need to wait to start the junior-level curriculum until your third year for most majors.
If you are interested and think you’d be eligible for the capacity constrained admission pathway, reach out to your ENGRUD adviser to discuss further.
