Engineering Student Organization and Engineering Affiliate process

If you're interested in becoming an Engineering Support Organization (ESO) or an Engineering Affiliate, review the criteria to determine eligibility.

What does it mean for my Registered Student Organization (RSO) to become an Engineering Student Organization (ESO)?

Only ESOs are eligible to use college space, access budgets and funding, participate on the Engineering Student Council and be administratively supported by one of our College of Engineering departments.

Benefits of becoming an ESO include:

  • Use of specialized engineering space, assigned space, and equipment.
  • Departmental supports of activities including purchasing/faculty mentorship/safety and SOP.
  • Oversight from the College of Engineering.
  • Washington Engineering Student Council (UWESC) membership and voting privileges.
  • Eligibility for UWESC funding.
  • Eligibility for participating at the Engineering Launch event.
  • Listing on the College of Engineering clubs & teams' website.

Considerations:

  • ESOs are ineligible to register as an RSO with the Student Activities Office (SAO).
  • ESOs may lose RSO privileges including reduced room reservation rates and eligibility for the RSO fair.
  • ESOs may be required to register for departmental credit, ex (AA298, & ME 398).

ESOs must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be approved by an UW engineering department.
  • Must be approved by an UW engineering department with an assigned space/access on campus.
  • Must relate specifically to the mission of the College of Engineering.
  • Must have an appropriate budget worktag from an UW engineering department.
  • Must have an engineering student serving in the leadership role.
  • Must have 50% or more members who are primarily engineering students.
  • Must have an engineering faculty/staff as club adviser (confirmed by the faculty/staff).
  • Must have the ability to safely perform any club activities or demonstration.
  • Must have an engineering department that serves as your admin "home" for finance/purchase support.
  • Must have an oversight and supervision by a CoE department, Environmental Health & Safety and appropriate oversight bodies (e.g. external review committee).

Engineering Affiliated RSOs

If your RSO does not satisfy all of the above requirements of becoming an ESO, but is engaged in efforts related to engineering, your RSO could be considered an Engineering Affiliate. Engineering Affiliates will not have all of the benefits of an ESO but will be included on the College of Engineering student communities, clubs & competition teams webpage.

Benefits of becoming an Engineering Affiliate include:

  • Can be eligible for benefits associated with the SAO.
  • Can be independent as defined by WAC.
  • Eligibility for participation at the Engineering Launch event.
  • Listing on the College of Engineering clubs & teams' website.

Considerations:

  • May not be eligible for the use of specialized engineering spaces/equipment, including assigned space.
  • May not have departmental budget support.
  • May be ineligible for the UWESC funding.
  • May not have the oversight of the engineering department.

Engineering Affiliates must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be registered annually with the Student Activities Office (SAO).
  • Must comply with the SAO policies and regulations.
  • Must relate to the mission of the College of Engineering.
  • Must have 50% members that are engineering students.
  • Must have an engineering student serving in a leadership role.
  • Does not require a dedicated space at the College of Engineering.
