The placement process

At the end of your first year, you will request placement into a major. Students that are in good ENGRUD standing, complete placement requirements and rank all of the engineering majors on their request form are guaranteed placement into an engineering major.

The Placement Request form

To request placement, ENGRUDs complete a Placement Request form in MyENGRUD which opens at the end of the academic year. The Placement Request form calls for a ranking of your potential majors, a short answer response and a resume:

In order to be guaranteed placement into an engineering major, you must rank all of the majors you are eligible for.

Short answer response (350 words max)

Reflect on your first-year experience in engineering at the University of Washington: your coursework, exploration activities, interactions with students, staff, faculty, and/or professionals. How have these experiences shaped your understanding of the engineering majors? How have they informed your selection of multiple engineering majors? (Provide specific examples where possible)

Resume

You will upload a pdf version of your one-page resume. An effective resume should provide a concise summary of your education, skills, experiences and accomplishments. 

Your resume will not be evaluated in the placement process. Instead, the Career Center @ Engineering will review resume submissions and may follow up with you to further support your resume development. This helps us make sure you are well-prepared for life after graduation.

You can also rely on your assigned engineering adviser to answer specific questions and to help you navigate the placement process. The engineering advising team offers group sessions in spring quarter that prepare students for the placement process and for writing their short answer response.

Placement data

The placement data page can give you a sense of how many students have requested and gotten into each major in recent years. While we cannot guarantee a specific major, the vast majority of ENGRUDs do end up getting placed into their first or second choice.
