Shijing Sun joined Mechanical Engineering this summer from the Toyota Research Institute, where she developed AI-powered solutions aimed at accelerating development of electric vehicle batteries and fuel cells for carbon neutral mobility. She previously worked as a research scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Department of Mechanical Engineering.
Sun’s research bridges materials science, data science and robotics to explore autonomous design for clean energy technologies. Her interest in addressing global energy, climate and sustainability challenges has influenced her research into materials and the use of AI to amplify research capacities and efficiency. She is a member of the MRS AI Staging Committee and an associate editor for APL Machine Learning.
