Undergraduate Admissions

Incoming Freshmen

To apply to the College of Engineering, prospective freshmen first apply to the University of Washington. Where the application asks for your intended major, indicate an engineering department to be considered for direct admission to that department.

Admission is competitive and having completed the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee you will be admitted to a department.

Direct Freshman Admission to a Department

If you are accepted to the UW and you indicated an engineering department as your preferred major on the freshman application, you are considered for direct admission to that department. Note that only applicants to autumn quarter are eligible for direct admissions.

Most departments enroll only 10-20% of their incoming class directly from high school. Direct admission applicants generally have taken or are taking calculus and at least two years of laboratory science (physics, chemistry preferred) in high school.

Notification of Direct Admission

If accepted by the UW, your request for direct admission may be indicated on the admission letter from the UW — or you may receive a letter 2 to 3 weeks later from the admitting department. If you are not admitted directly to a department, you are considered a "pre-engineering major."

Early Department Admission for UW Pre-engineering Majors

Currently enrolled students at the UW who have completed the math, English and physical science courses required for admission by their preferred department can apply to the department at the end of their first academic year at UW.

Upper-Division Admission for UW Pre-engineering Majors

Students must complete specific pre-requisites for each department prior to application. Most students typically apply to the department at the middle or end of their sophomore year for junior year admission.
