Visiting Committee Charter

Purposes: The College of Engineering Visiting Committee will convene
in order to:

  • analyze issues and make recommendations to the dean
  • produce a formal report of its findings to the UW provost
  • provide advice and feedback on strategic planning
  • advocate for engineering with the Washington State Legislature, the UW Board of Regents and the president and provost
  • strengthen the college’s relationship with all constituencies

Membership: The committee will have 25-30 members including but not limited to academics (2), venture capitalists (2), entrepreneur (1), government (1), representative leader from engineering professional organization (1), diverse industry and corporate representation (18). We will consider sphere of influence, expertise, gender, geographic location, ethnicity, company affiliation in selecting a well-rounded and representative committee.

Terms of office: Members are selected to serve a three year term. Each member may serve only two (2) consecutive terms. Members may be asked to return to the committee after one year off active committee service.

Officers: There will be a three (3) member Executive Committee including the committee chair.

Meetings: Visiting Committee meetings will be held twice annually. The all day meetings will include presentations, discussion(s) of the issues, working sessions, and creation of a brief formal report. The agenda for the meeting will be developed by the dean in concurrence with the executive committee.

Expectations: Members of the College of Engineering’s Visiting Committee are expected to regularly attend the annual meetings, prepare for the meeting’s agenda using materials provided, advocate for the College as appropriate, and support the College annually at the Dean’s Club level ($1000 or more).
