NSF Funding for Undergraduate Research

The National Science Foundation (NSF) supports the active participation of undergraduates in research funded by the foundation. Support is granted through NSF's Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program. As of 2012, NSF prefers you submit the REU requests as part of your original proposal. If you want to submit a supplement request, after you receive a grant, call your program officer.

Apply for REU Funding for Undergraduates

You may request funding for up to two students on your project (see section below for exception). Apply for REU funding by uploading a supplemental request through FastLane. Include:

  • Budget
  • Short project description of the proposed plan to include undergraduates in your work
  • If students have already been identified, brief biosketch in Supplementary Documents section on NSF FastLane

Timelines for submissions vary by directorate so you are advised to discuss your request ahead of time with your NSF program manager before submitting.

Underrepresented Groups

If your REU funding request includes a student from a group underrepresented in engineering (Latino/a, African-American, American Indian, women, or people with disabilities), you may be able to receive funding for three students. The College of Engineering Office of Diversity & Access can help you identify excellent, underrepresented students in your department to recruit.     Everything that is in RED should be replaced with the appropriate information.
  • REU Budget Template (updated 9/2012)
    Enter the desired number of students (1, 2, or 3) and you will get a figure for their stipend (i.e. $6400/student—if you think you need more, query your program manager) and the 54.5% in indirect costs charged for all expenditures, excluding student stipends.
