Paolo Calvi joins the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering as an assistant professor. He was most recently a postdoctoral researcher at the University at Buffalo, SUNY.
Paolo’s research focuses on reducing risk by considering all aspects of hazard, vulnerability and exposure response of existing structural systems. He explores the behavior of structures and the response of non-structural components during seismic events like earthquakes, when structures are subjected to monotonic, cyclic and dynamic force. His work uses sensor technology such as fiber optic sensors, thermal imaging devices and structural analysis tools to maintain safety and security of reinforced concrete buildings and bridges. By developing practical modelling procedures for the design of new structures, he is able to help assess seismic risk on regional and national scales.
