Hannaneh Hajishirzi returns to the Allen School this fall as an assistant professor. She previously held roles in UW Engineering as a research professor in electrical engineering and an adjunct professor in the Allen School. Hannaneh develops robust, scalable systems that can understand, interpret and reason data drawn from multiple sources, leveraging two complementary developments in the field of AI — symbolic representation and end-to-end deep learning neural models. She designs algorithms for question answering, semantic understanding, and information extraction from textual and visual data, including news articles, web data, technical documents and conversations.
She has taught a variety of introductory and advanced courses in artificial intelligence, statistical machine learning, natural language processing, and grounded language acquisition and vision. She has earned numerous awards for her research, including an Allen Distinguished Investigator Award, Google Faculty Research Award, Bloomberg Data Science Award, Amazon Research Award and SIGDIAL Best Paper Award.
