In exactly 1 month I will be on a plane flying back to Seattle. I have spent 3 out of my 4 months abroad in Hong Kong here at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Since my last post, which was exactly 1 month into my exchange, a lot has changed. Overall, I have experienced lots of traveling around Asia, explored Hong Kong more as a local rather than a short-term tourist, and was hit by a tough wave of midterms here at my exchange university.

Exactly 4 weeks ago I got off of a 16 hour flight from Seattle and landed in Hong Kong to begin my semester abroad as an exchange student. I was unprepared in every single way imaginable. The first few days were anything but smooth. The weather was unexpectedly freezing, basically the same weather I thought I left behind in Seattle, and caused me to catch a cold on my second day here.

Between my six weeks of living and studying in Toulouse as well as traveling around the country, for the first time in my life I was able to fully immerse myself in a foreign culture. This wasn't a two-week vacation with hotel stays and restaurants every night, it was dorms and public transport and French grocery shopping. That meant breaking some stereotypes (while humorously confirming some others), but it also meant leaving behind the comfort and ease of home to be really and truly challenged.

My first block of my study abroad was a 3D scanning and printing course. Having done 3D printing in the research laboratory I worked in back at UW I expected to know the basics of how 3D printing works and it's capabilities. However as the class went on it was clear that the 3D printing done at the Technical University of Berlin was very different from what I was used to.

Before coming to Berlin I had very little idea about what kind of city this is. Having been in Seattle and generally in the United States for all of my life, I assumed Berlin would be like any other metropolitan city I've been to, however as I discovered, Berlin has a unique personality of its own.
