Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE)

The goal of the WiSE program is to recruit and support women of all ethnic backgrounds in science and engineering (S&E) and to create an academic and social climate at the UW which is conducive to both men and women in S&E at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

WiSE creates a collaborative and learner-centered environment for women in S&E and provides both academic and support programs including tutoring, professional mentoring, peer mentoring, and advising. On this page, learn about the following WiSE programs:

Academic Services

Advising

Trying to decide which major is right for you? What classes to register for? Where to find resources for women in science and engineering?

If so, schedule an appointment with an academic adviser. Cathryne Jordan, WiSE's primary academic adviser, is available to meet with you Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. located in Loew Hall 301. To make an appointment, call (206) 543-1770 or email jordancl@u.washington.edu or stop by Loew 301 to either drop in (if available) or schedule an appointment.

Academic Workshops

“Academic workshops” are a one-credit/no credit course (ENGR 197) offered Autumn, Winter, and Spring quarters. The workshops provide additional support for students taking some of the core engineering pre-requisite classes. Learn more about academic workshops.

Study Centers and Learning Facilitators

The Engineering Academic Center, located on the 2nd floor of Loew Hall, provides space to meet with tutors, learning facilitators and other students, with access to computers and other equipment. Learn more about study centers.

ENGR 199D Study Course

Engineering 199 is a one-credit study class (credit/no-credit) and can be taken up to three times for credit. The essential class requirements:

  • Study for three hours a week in 207, 215, or 301 Loew Hall. This time can also be used for group study or meeting with your tutor. You record your on-location study time on timesheets kept in a three ring binder labeled “Engineering 199W”. Timesheets are checked by WiSE staff regularly. At the end of each quarter, you submit your timesheets to the WiSE Staff in Loew 301.
  • Turn in a one-page paper reflecting on your use of the study time and benefits of having the time requirements imposed on your schedule. Use a font no larger than 12 point and include your name and Student ID number.
