Dale Carlson has held university administration and faculty posts since 1955. At the University of Washington he has served as Dean of the College of Engineering, supervising eight departments with over 450 faculty and staff and 4300 students, the Applied Physics Laboratory Board, the ROTC program, the Bioengineering Program, and the Richland Joint Center for Graduate Studies. He also served as Professor and Chairman of Civil Engineering, and Director of the Solid Waste Management Program. As a professor he supervised 19 PhD and 87 MS graduate students and was principal or co-principal investigator on eighteen research grants. He was the Director of the Valle Scholarship and Scandinavian Exchange Program that he initiated and governed from 1980-2002. As the Valle Director, he managed disbursements for the fifteen million dollar trust fund and coordinated activities for some forty graduate students each year. Currently, Dale Carlson is a member of the Valle Advisory Committee and continues to promote international relations. At Seattle University he was Chairman of the Civil Engineering Department and then Dean of the School of Science and Engineering. He has been a visiting professor at the Technical University of Denmark, the Royal College of Agriculture at Uppsala, Sweden, and Guest of Honor at the Technical University of Norway.

He has served as a program reviewer for the National Science Foundation, the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Security Education Program, the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, and the Texas Higher Education Board. For eight years he served on the Washington State Board of Health as a member and chair.

Dale is a diplomate in the American Academy of Environmental Engineers, a member of the International Water Academy and a member of a number of other professional societies. He currently is active on national, regional and local boards and committees including professional, civic and church organizations. He has over 100 publications primarily in environmental management and control. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi, Tau Beta Pi and an honorary member of Chi Epsilon. His civic clubs include the Rainier Club, the Swedish Club, the Swedish-American Chamber of Commerce and the Norwegian-American Chamber of Commerce.

He is a licensed professional engineer and has been a practicing engineer and consultant to a number of corporations and government agencies. He served as a combat infantryman in the U.S. Army from 1943-1946.
