Supplemental REUs Process

Requests for support of REU activity involve a very simple process. Please see the program announcement at the NSF REU Website.

REU Sample Letter

REU Budget Template

You can apply for REU funding to support undergraduates on your project through a fairly simple process. You just upload a SUPPLEMENTAL request through FASTLANE with a budget, a short project description of the proposed plan to include undergraduates in your work, and, if students have already been identified, their CVs. The program managers welcome REU requests because the funding comes out of a separate pot of money.

To make things as simple as possible, above is a link to a sample letter that can be used for this request. Everything that is in RED should be replaced with the appropriate information. In addition, there is an excel budget spreadsheet. You simply enter the desired number of students (1, 2, or 3) and you will get a figure for their stipend (i.e. $4800/student -- if you think you need more, query your program manager) and the 25% overhead rate charged by the REU program.

Note -- you can request up to two students. However, if you include a student who is under-represented in engineering (Hispanic-American, African-American, Native American, women, or people with disabilities), you can get funding for 3 students. As you can see in the attached letter, the Dean's office can help you identify excellent underrepresented students in your department to recruit for your project. (Please contact Cindy Bush if you would like names of potential students to recruit.)

We hope that you will take advantage of this great opportunity to include more outstanding undergraduates in the exciting research going on in COE.
