Matt O'Donnell photoWelcoming a New Class of Innovators

Dear Friends of Engineering,

As we kick off a new academic year, I am thrilled to introduce 11 new faculty members to the College of Engineering. Trained at leading institutions around the world, these outstanding researchers and teachers will work across disciplines to advance engineering.

New faculty profiles »

1st row: Candan Tamerler-Behar (MSE), Deok-Ho Kim (BioE), Cecilia Aragon (HCDE), Hugh Hillhouse (ChemE)

2nd row: Peter Pauzauskie (MSE), Ruikang "Ricky" Wang (BioE), Joshua Smith (CSE, EE), Xiaodong Xu (MSE)

3rd row: Luke Zettlemoyer (CSE), Paul Wiggins (BioE), Qifeng Zhang (MSE)

Competition for these positions was fierce and they join a prestigious group of young CoE faculty receiving national acclaim and winning big grants. In each of the past four years we have brought in 12 to 15 new faculty members, and the growth in research funding has been phenomenal. Last year for the first time, research funding surpassed $100 million. Actually, we blasted past to $112 million in awards, which in these difficult times allows us to maintain our most vital academic and research activities. Through unique partnerships on campus and creative collaborations we continue to strengthen our faculty and research programs.

We are excited to have these distinguished professors join our vibrant community. I hope you'll take the opportunity to learn more about them. Thank you for reading Washington Engineer.
