Washington Engineer Special Edition - September 2009
Welcome to a New Class of Innovators
Dear Friends of Engineering,
I’m thrilled to introduce fourteen new faculty members to the College of Engineering.
They join a prestigious group of young CoE faculty receiving national acclaim. In the last year alone, UW faculty received eight NSF CAREER Awards and one PECASE--tying us for second nationally this year for most CAREER Awards in engineering and computer science. Video »

Recent Faculty Honors
As we welcome new faculty, I'd like to take this opportunity to highlight the accomplishments of those who recently joined the College.
TR35 Outstanding Innovator Award for Shwetak Patel
Assistant professor of computer science and electrical engineering Shwetak Patel was recently recognized for his work developing sensors that monitor how people move through their homes and how they use electricity, gas, and water (see our news release.)
Hochberg Honored with PECASE
Michael Hochberg, an assistant professor in electrical engineering, received a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers for his work in nanophotonics. Hochberg directs the UW's Nanophotonics Laboratory and is currently installing a multimillion-dollar electron beam lithography tool that will be used to create prototypes for nanotechnology designs (see our news release).
What a terrific way to kick off a new academic year. We are excited to have these distinguished professors join our vibrant community. Thank you for the opportunity to share this wonderful news.
