tidal energy turbine underwater Assessing Environmental Effects of Tidal Turbines UW engineers are developing new techniques to monitor a proposed tidal-energy project in Puget Sound. Meanwhile, another group is using computer models to study tidal turbines' possible effects on sediments and fish.

Benjamin Hall Molecular Imaging and Therapy Center to Develop, Commercialize Technologies Molecular imaging promises earlier and better diagnoses and more customized treatment for conditions such as cancer and heart disease. Dean O’Donnell and colleagues in bioengineering, radiology and applied physics have launched a center to develop technologies in ultrasound-based molecular imaging and therapy.

 

Andrew Meltzoff and Rajesh Rao with humanoid robot I Want to See What You See: Babies Treat ‘Social Robots’ as Sentient Beings Computer scientist Rajesh Rao teamed up with UW psychologists to look at how babies interact with robots. When adults interact with robots, babies view the ‘bots as living things.

Five UW engineering faculty, in fields ranging from computer vision to wireless signal processing, have been named 2011 Fellows of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

A team of UW engineering undergraduates won a $100K 'Grant Challenges Explorations' grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Students will test their tool's ability to increase access to ultrasound in Africa to lower childbirth-related mortality.

 

Chin Jung Cheng, Charlie Matlack, Penny Huang and Jacqueline Linnes Students' Water-testing Tool Wins $40,000, Launches Nonprofit
Engineering students won an international online contest to monitor water disinfection by solar rays. The four students shared a Rockefeller Foundation prize and are now working to turn their concept into a reality.
