Hi, I’m Matt O’Donnell. I'm the dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Washington. I’m thrilled to introduce 14 new faculty members to the College this year. They were trained at leading institutions worldwide and they join a prestigious group we’ve brought in over the last few years.

In fact, over the last three years we’ve had 15 NSF CAREER award winners and 3 PECASE award winners. This year alone we’ve had 8 NSF CAREER award winners and 1 PECASE award winner. This tied us for second nationally for the most CAREER awards in engineering and computer science.

We have two I want to highlight from this group. The first is Michael Hochberg who received a PECASE this year for his work in nanophotonics. And second, Shwetak Patel, who was recognized as a TR35 outstanding innovator by Technology Review magazine.

So I hope you’ll take a moment to learn more about these new faculty members. I think it’s a terrific way to kick off a new academic year.

Thanks for reading Washington Engineer.
