Paul Yager Appointed Chair of Bioengineering

Paul Yager photoThe University of Washington’s College of Engineering and School of Medicine is pleased to announce the appointment of Paul Yager as Chair of the Bioengineering Department.

As a joint department in engineering and medicine, UW Bioengineering is well positioned to play an increasing role in improving medical care and technology nationally and globally. Under Paul’s able leadership, we expect to make great progress in seven major research and training themes:

  • Distributed Diagnosis and Home Healthcare (D2H2) & Global Health
  • Engineering Biology
  • Molecular Engineering
  • Neural Engineering
  • Imaging and Image-Guided Therapy
  • Analytical Biomedicine
  • Learning Engineering from Biology

The department is ranked in the top five graduate programs (2009) by U.S. News & World Report, and has recently been ranked first in NIH Research Awards to biomedical engineering and third in the National Research Council ranking of Bioengineering Departments.

Paul received his A.B. from Princeton in Biochemistry and his PhD in Chemistry from the University of Oregon. He has been a faculty member at UW since 1987. His current research focus is decentralization of biomedical diagnostic testing. He is developing a low-cost, rugged point-of-care blood analysis instrument based on microfluidics for diagnosing diseases in the developing world. This project is funded by a $15.4 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Learn more about Paul Yager.

Please join us in congratulating Paul.
