Past recipients of a CoE Innovator award are ineligible to receive an award in the same category in which they have previously won. They are, however, eligible to win an award in a different category.
Faculty Innovator: Teaching and Learning
Nominee Eligibility
Any tenure-track faculty member, lecturer, or instructor whose home department is within the College of Engineering is eligible to receive this award. Faculty who have previously received a UW Distinguished Teaching Award and/or a CoE Teaching Award are not eligible.
Nominee Criteria
Nominee should:
- Demonstrate outstanding contributions to engineering education through:
- Innovative and lasting contributions to engineering education, such as:
- Effective curriculum or teaching techniques
- Enhancement of participation of under-represented groups
- Connecting the educational experience with the professional practice of engineering
- High-level commitment to students both in and outside of the classroom
- Innovative and lasting contributions to engineering education, such as:
- Show evidence of improving education. For example: mentoring of junior faculty, leadership, educational scholarship, etc.

Faculty Innovator: Research
Nominee Eligibility
Any faculty member whose home department is within the College of Engineering and who has not previously been awarded a CoE Faculty Research award is eligible to receive this award.
Nominee criteria
Nominee should:
- Exemplify excellence in scholarship and research through:
- Extraordinary contributions and dedication to research
- Support of diverse students in research
- Innovative approaches in research, scholarship or creative activities
- Have a record of research contributions with a wide impact.
- Be recognized externally and hold distinction as a scholar as demonstrated through awards, memberships in prestigious professional organizations, and/or invited lectures and papers.

Faculty Innovator: Junior
Nominee Eligibility
Nominee must be in an assistant professor rank and have a home department within the College of Engineering. Those who have previously received a UW Distinguished Teaching Award and/or a CoE Junior Faculty award are not eligible.
Nominee Criteria
Nominee should:
- Exemplify excellence in research and/or education through:
- Exemplary scholarship
- Extraordinary contributions and dedication
- New and innovative research and/or educational programs
- High level of commitment to students
- Enhancement of participation of under-represented groups
- Show that research results contribute to the expansion of knowledge or improvement of quality of life.
- Show evidence of making an impact to improve education.

Student Innovator: Teaching
Nominee Eligibility
Nominee must have held a student level teaching position (for example, teaching assistant, predoctoral lecturer, predoctoral instructor, etc.) in the College of Engineering within the past 12 months and may not have received a CoE Teaching Assistant award previously.
Nominee Criteria
Nominee should:
- Demonstrate exemplary teaching, through:
- Enthusiasm for the subject and ability to engage students
- Original and innovative approaches in the classroom
- Enhancement of participation of under-represented groups
- Work with professors to ensure that students’ needs, interests, and problems are addressed.

Student Innovator: Research
Nominee Eligibility
Nominee must have held a student level research position (for example, research assistant, predoctoral researcher, etc.) in the College of Engineering within the past 12 months and may not have been awarded a CoE Research Assistant award previously.
Nominee Criteria
Nominee should demonstrate merit in research through:
- Publications, external recognition, invited presentations, etc.
- Innovation and creativity

Staff Innovator: Classified
Nominee Eligibility
Nominee must be a permanent classified staff member, employed at least six months in the College of Engineering, who has not received a UW Distinguished Staff Award and/or a CoE Classified Staff award previously.
Nominee Criteria
Nominee should:
- Have significant impact on his or her department or the College of Engineering through:
- Excellent customer service
- Resourcefulness
- Innovation and creativity
- Promoting positive morale
- Consistently exceed expectations on the job. For example, significantly improving a work process or system which increases efficiency or customer satisfaction.

- Two or three letters of support
Staff Innovator: Professional
Nominee Eligibility
Nominee must be a permanent professional staff member (including research engineers), employed at least six months in the College of Engineering, who has not previously received a UW Distinguished Staff Award and/or a CoE Professional Staff award.
Nominee Criteria
Nominee should:
- Have significant impact on his/her department or the College of Engineering through:
- Excellent customer service
- Resourcefulness
- Innovation and creativity
- Promoting positive morale
- Consistently exceed expectations on the job, by, for example, significantly improving a work process or system which increases efficiency or customer satisfaction.

Innovator: Team
Team Eligibility
Teams must be a group within the College of Engineering who are united for a common purpose or project and have ten members or less. Teams who have previously been awarded a CoE Team award are ineligible.
Team Criteria
A team may be nominated for either:
- An extraordinary accomplishment demonstrated by the completion of a special work project or activity during the last year or
- A superior, sustained effort that has contributed significantly to the mission of the college
Additional Support

Team award money will be split equally among all CoE team members. Only those team members who are employed within the College of Engineering are eligible for the cash award.
Dean's Award
This award is solely at the discretion of the Dean. No nominations are accepted for this award. Recipients will be chosen for special recognition of extraordinary accomplishments or significant contributions to the College of Engineering.
