MFF Training and Orientation
New lab users are required to attend orientation and training sessions. To begin, review the lab training policy below and visit the training schedule to register for a lab orientation and applicable training sessions.
Lab Training Policy
Lab Orientation and Exam
Completion of the lab orientation as well as passing the orientation exam is required prior to taking any other training class.
Dates and times of classes are subject to change. It is important to register early, so that any schedule revisions can be communicated. If users arrive more than 15 minutes late to a class, the trainer can refuse training.
Online Laboratory Chemicals Training
All users are expected to complete the online safety training class entitled "Managing Laboratory Chemicals". This is an entirely online training and is meant to compliment and reinforce the existing lab safety training. All users of the lab must pass training and have documentation on file with the lab safety officer and manager.
Please follow these steps to complete the training:
- Visit the EH&S Online Managing Laboratory Chemicals course page at http://www.ehs.washington.edu/pubcookie/train/labchem/index.shtm
- Complete the training successfully. Take as long as you need.
- On the certification form at the end of training, please enter MFF Safety Committee as your supervisor's name, and mff-safety@engr.washington.edu as your supervisor's e-mail.
The employee number or student number should be the number on the front of your Husky Card (or white card for industrial users).
An e-mail will be sent to you and the safety committee. This e-mail is certification that you completed the training course. Keep a copy of the e-mail for your records.
Equipment Training Preparation
Operating instructions for many pieces of equipment are posted on the web page under that equipment. Users should bring a copy to the trainings and take notes as needed. Trainers have the right to turn away users without operating procedures.
Meeting Locations
The lab orientation, wet chemistry and CORAL trainings meet in the Fluke Hall lobby. The dicing saw and CO2 laser classes meet in the back end processing room. All other classes meet in the gowning room.
Follow-Up Session Required
To become an authorized user for a particular piece of equipment, enroll in the appropriate class at least one week prior to the date of the class, attend the class, then schedule a follow up session with the instructor, where you demonstrate your knowledge of the system or process.
Scheduling a Follow-Up Session
If you need to be authorized quickly, please contact the instructor promptly to reserve the next follow up session, as there are limited follow up sessions for a given week, and depend on class size.
Follow-Up Preparation
To prepare for a follow up, contact the instructor for mutually agreed times. Staff will reserve the equipment via CORAL. Users should bring their copy of the operating procedure and any notes to help them effectively operate the system.
Special Sessions
Special class sessions are available for those people for whom the schedule does not work. There will be a special charge associated with a custom class that will be charge at standard staff rates + CORAL equipment rates. Email staff to find out when an instructor is available for a special class.
Equipment Authorization
Authorization for equipment use is good for one year, barring significant hardware or policy changes. If a user does not use a piece of equipment within one year, their certification is considered lapse. Users will have to successfully complete a follow-up session to remedy any equipment certification lapse.
