Tom and Jean Gibbs

Tom Gibbs (BSCE '54, MSCE '66) has had a big impact on Seattle’s environment. As the third employee of the newly formed Seattle METRO in 1959, he rose through administrative posts to become executive director from 1967 to 1974, during the cleanup of Lake Washington and nearby Puget Sound waters. Metro Transit also was created during his tenure. Tom then joined the engineering firm CH2M Hill and consulted on large water-related projects in the U.S., Australia, and Egypt.

Since retiring in 1997, Tom has served on the board of the Washington State Major League Baseball Stadium Public Facilities District and as chair during construction of Safeco Field. Tom and his wife, Jean, are dedicated conservationists and founding members of the Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust. Jean is a talented gourd artist whose work is shown in galleries in Arizona and Washington.

Tom and Jean are members of the UW President’s Club. Their $250,000 endowment with $125,000 in UW matching funds established the Charles V. "Tom" and Jean C. Gibbs Endowed Presidential Fellowship in Environmental Engineering.
