Find an Undergrad Research Project
The first step to finding a research position is approaching your teachers. Get to know them and attend their office hours. It’s important to come prepared to a meeting with faculty.
- Your TAs are also outstanding resources. Most TAs also work directly in labs and with professors who may be looking for undergraduate students. They may even supervise your project!
- Connect with your Academic Adviser. Advisers have inside knowledge about open Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) positions.
- Talk with your friends. They may have different connections or may have worked in a research position.
- You can also seek one-on-one advising with the Undergraduate Research Program.
Preparation
When you meet with faculty, come prepared:
- Learn about their projects from the engineering department web sites.
- Write a resume that includes information about the coursework you have completed, your related skills, and your class projects. Make sure to highlight any previous research experiences. For resume writing information and resources, see the Center for Career Services Web site.
