HOME TUITION AND UW EXCHANGES

Beginning with the Fall of 1998, many UW exchanges became part of the UW's Home Tuition Program. Though this approach to funding does increase the cost of exchanges somewhat, it will also allow a significantly greater number of UW and international students to participate. The Home Tuition Program requires a strict one-for-one reciprocity in any exchange. The funding mechanism works this way: UW students pay an amount equal to their regular tuition & fees to the International Programs and Exchanges Office, plus a $200/quarter concurrent enrollment fee. When they arrive at the host institution overseas, all tuition and most fees are waived. Here in Seattle, tuition and most fees for the incoming students from overseas partner universities will be paid with the funds provided by the outgoing UW students. In this way, students are not faced with tuition costs higher than those at their home university. And the numbers of participants can be increased as the exchange is no longer dependent on a limited number of tuition waivers. Sample Tuition Budgets for Undergraduates on Home Tuition Exchanges for the 2005/06 Academic Year: Resident Undergraduate Tuition: $5,610 Non-resident UG Tuition: $19,908 Concurrent Enrollment: 600 600 TOTALS: $6,210 $20,508 Additional Expenses: In addition to tuition, students are expected to meet the costs of transportation, room, board, health insurance and incidentals. Estimates for these non-tuition expenses, depending on the region and cost of living, range from $1,000 - 2,500 each month. By comparison, the UW estimates that the "traditional" undergraduate has $1,100 - $1,600 each month in non-tuition expenses while studying here in Seattle.
