Exchange Opportunities from the UW Provost's Office:

GRANTS FOR INTERNATIONAL FACULTY EXCHANGES
Memo from Susan Jeffords, Vice Provost for Global Affairs

"The University has formal agreements with more than 200 universities and institutes around the world.  While the primary focus of our exchange efforts is to provide UW students with international educational experiences, nearly all of these agreements have the capacity to involve greater numbers of faculty members as well.  Faculty exchanges that include both teaching and research strengthen our international institutional relationships and open up greater learning opportunities for all involved.

I invite you to submit a proposal for your unit's faculty to participate in one of these international exchanges to take place during the 2006-07 academic year.  These exchanges typically last for an academic term (though shorter exchanges are possible); during that period the exchanged faculty members stay on salary at their home institution, and the host institution provides housing support.  Grants from the Provost's Office support airfare for the UW faculty going abroad and housing support for the visiting faculty when they are here.

The first step in this process is to review the list of exchange institutions on the Office of International Programs & Exchanges (IP&E) website:
http://ipe.washington.edu/affiliates/partners.html

The second step is to identify those institutions with which you may already have, or would like to have, some level of faculty collaboration.  In addition, please take this opportunity to submit any new exchange information to the IP&E.

Your department, school, college or campus faculty exchange proposal should include information on the following:

We are also able to consider awarding a limited number of travel grants to departments that wish to explore a new international site for a departmental study program.   For example, a faculty member planning to take a group of UW students to another country in 2007 could travel to that country in 2006 to gauge the suitability of the site and to identify local contacts, guest lecturers, housing options and to explore issues of safety and security.

International Faculty Exchange Proposals for 2006/07 should be sent to David Fenner at Box 355815 or electronically to dfenner@u.washington.edu by February 10, 2006.   Please feel free to contact David or me if you have any questions.

Thank you for your interest in supporting and enhancing UW's exciting exchange programs."

U.S. Fulbright 2007-2008 Scholar Awards

The 2007-2008 application cycle for U.S. Fulbright scholar awards is open. Engineering faculty at the University of Washington are encouraged to apply.  Note the range of grant options in Sub-Saharan Africa.

This year seven countries:
Botswana, Cote d’Ivoire, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Mauritius, Namibia, and Zambia have an award specifically for teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in engineering.  Some of the sub-fields called for include: electrical engineering with a focus on telecommunications and electric power systems (Botswana); electrical engineering with a focus on electro-mechanics, industrial drawing, material resistance, and electronics (Cote d’Ivoire); civil engineering (Eritrea); civil engineering, environmental engineering, highway engineering, hydrology, and mechanical engineering (Ethiopia); and electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, software engineering, and textile technology (Mauritius).

Most African countries also have an
“All Disciplines” award, for which applications are accepted in any area of study, including engineering, taught at a participating host institution.  Likewise, South Africa and Rwanda have “Science and Technology” awards for which applicants in engineering can also apply.

All of these awards mentioned above are available for a combination of lecturing, faculty training, curriculum development, student thesis advising and scholarly research. Research awards are also available for projects in all disciplines or for HIV/AIDS-related projects.  For specific award information and to apply please visit the U.S. Fulbright web site  http://www.cies.org/us_scholars/us_awards/.
Complete application materials are due at the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) by August 1, 2006.  Please note that U.S.
citizenship and a Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree are required.

If you or your colleagues would like further information on opportunities in Sub-Saharan Africa, please feel free to contact:

Global Renowned Scholars Program (GRSP) 2007 University of Science and Technology Beijing

The University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB)was founded in 1952. It is among a limited number of universities in China authorized to establish graduate schools. It has been supervised directly by the Ministry of Education since 1998, and was one of the first groups of universities entering “Project 211”, a central government program designed to build 100 top-ranking universities in the 21st century. At December 30th, 2006, it had 12547 undergraduate students, 7216 graduate students and 1412 teaching staff. USTB has specific strength in solving technological problems in modern metallurgy and materials processing, as well as in developing new industrial technologies. Over 1000 research projects have been awarded prizes at state, provincial or ministry level since 1978, with more than 100 prizes being at state level. Program Description The University of Science and Technology Beijing is seeking to develop common interests with leading universities in the United States and is looking forward to establishing student exchange programs and cooperation at research level. It is therefore offering this GRSP to professors and department/university officials in your university who have a strong interest in one or more of the fields listed below. During their visit, visiting professors will have first-hand experience of living in Beijing. It is hoped that they will develop common research interests with their counterparts at USTB, be involved in academic exchanges and introduce their own faculty and university to USTB. They will also be invited to meet and communicate with Chinese students in USTB and become acquainted with the campus life of the university.
