KNOWLEDGE FOR THE SALISH SEA: TOWARD COLLABORATIVE TRANSBOUNDARY SOLUTIONS

2007 Georgia Basin Puget Sound Research Conference

Vancouver, British Columbia
March 26–29, 2007

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS IS NOW CLOSED

The Puget Sound Action Team, the Georgia Basin Action Plan partners, and our generous co-sponsors invite submissions of abstracts for oral and poster presentations at the 2007 Georgia Basin Puget Sound Research Conference. This 8th biannual Conference is the premier science gathering focused on the Georgia Basin Puget Sound region, and will provide a venue for scientists, resource managers and decision makers from a wide range of disciplines to share findings and perspectives.

The 2007 Conference theme is:

Science, knowledge and action in support of a sustainable transboundary region

Representatives from the scientific community, academia (including students), First Nations and Tribes, non-profit organizations, government, and business and industry are welcome to submit abstracts.

Abstracts that address this theme from an interdisciplinary and integrative perspective are welcomed. Presentations from Coast Salish, highlighting traditional knowledge, are particularly encouraged. Reports, white papers, etc., that extend beyond the traditional science paper are welcomed, as are submissions addressing examples of transboundary ecosystem management in other regions of the world – particularly as these relate to the conference theme.

Where relevant, abstracts should address the following issues:

    • The interface between science and policy
    • Data gaps, knowledge gaps and the uncertainties that remain
    • Examples of partnerships for a changing environment
    • The role of humans as part of the ecosystem

Abstracts addressing the topics identified below are welcome. However, the Committee encourages abstracts that address the linkages amongst categories and that consider the interfaces between them. Topics have been organized in a “Pressure-State-Response” framework to aid in categorization. The topics identified here are not intended to be exhaustive, and abstracts on additional related topics will be considered:

Habitat and Species

    • Water quality and quantity
    • Landscape and ecosystem scale studies (basins, watersheds)
    • Nearshore habitat
    • Status and distribution of plants, animals and invertebrates
    • Species recovery
    • Air quality
    • Human health

Stresses and Impacts

    • Climate change
    • Toxic contaminants
    • Marine debris
    • Invasive species
    • Human population growth and development

    • Ecosystem indicators
    • Monitoring and evaluation
    • Decision-making tools
    • Integrated assessment
    • Partnerships and collaborative efforts
    • Education and outreach, citizen involvement
    • Traditional, ecological and social knowledge
    • Governance approaches

Panels – Workshops – Sessions – Other Activities

The Conference Advisory Committee also invites proposals for interactive workshop sessions, facilitated panels, technical workshops, outdoor learning activities and field trips. Such proposals should include a brief description of the issue or issues being addressed, the name of the organizer and a list of likely participants. Organizers will serve as session chairs and moderators, and will ensure that panelists and facilitators of sessions and workshops fulfill all requirements including submissions of abstracts and biographies.
