In 1992, the City of Renton, Washington placed a Stone Matrix Asphalt mix on a local street and an arterial as a test project. The city ran out of the SMA mix near the end of one of the sites and had to place a different asphalt mix they had used many times previously. The site gives pavement practitioners the opportunity for side by side comparison of the SMA mix to the city's usual mix. Renton was one of the first cities in the USA to use the SMA mix. This tour will take conference attendees to the Renton SMA site where city personnel will describe their reasons for trying SMA and their subsequent use of the SMA on other sites in Renton.
Cost: $25
1:30-4:30 p.m. (lunch not included)
The Boeing Company has become synonymous with air transportation through major advancements in the aeronautical industry with their 747, 767, and 777 aircraft. As pioneers in the "Age of Flight," Boeing invites you to tour their enormous technical center. A film presentation will inform you of their historical beginnings, present work, and future goals. You will then embark on a unique tour of the building and view the diligent assembly process. The building, the largest (by volume) in the world, is heated in the winter solely by body heat and the machines in use! You will view the aircraft in various stages of production from fuselages to near completion as they are rolled from each assembly point. This private tour will open your eyes to future technology and the aircraft of today and tomorrow.
Cost: $45

This project, completed in 1992, is a showcase of engineering feats with bridges that float, tunnels that breathe, textured walls, bike and pedestrian trails and landscaped lids. It took 30 years to complete due in large part to a long, arduous public involvement process with over 1,300 public meetings. As a result of public involvement, stringent environmental regulations, and the incorporation of alternative modes of transportation (carpools, vanpools, buses, trains, and bicycles) the final design is a roadway eight lanes wide, set down in a trench, with portions of it lidded. Two of the eight lanes are designed to facilitate travel for high-occupancy vehicles. This seven mile stretch of interstate cost $1.56 billion to complete (or approximately $27 million per lane-mile). This tour will take delegates through the completed project with stops at key locations for additional discussions.
Cost: $25
