Abstract The present sample contains information on the preparation of manuscripts for the 5th International Managing Pavements Conference which will be held in Seattle in August of 2001. Abstracts should be 250 words or less, self-contained, and must not require reference to the paper to be understood. The primary objectives and scope of the study or the reasons for writing the paper should be stated; the techniques or approaches should be described only to the extent necessary for comprehension; and the findings and conclusions should be presented concisely. The abstract should not contain unfamiliar terms that are not defined, reference citations, or display equations or lists. (You may also want to submit this abstract as your short abstract to be handed out at the conference.)
GENERAL FORMATTING SPECIFICATIONS
Page Length
The length of each paper, including the abstract, figures, tables, and references may not exceed a maximum of 15 pages or 7,500 words. Papers should be prepared in a single-column format. Single-space all text material, including references, table titles, and figure captions.
Margins
The page margins should be set to 25 mm (1 inch) on top, bottom and sides of page. (If you are using A4 paper, set bottom margin to 42 mm.)
Paragraphs
The first line of each paragraph of body text should be indented 0.2 in.; no extra line space between paragraphs; no first-line indent after a subhead.
Type
The suggested type style (font) is Times Roman. Type size should be no smaller than 10 point.
Subheads
All headings use a separate line and should be flush with the left margin. There should be a hard return before and after each heading. Samples of each of four levels of headings are shown below. Each heading is formatted to have extra space before and after the heading line.
FIRST-LEVEL HEAD
First-level headings are all uppercase using boldface type.
Second-Level Head
Second-level headings use initial capitals, boldface type and are flush left.
Third-Level Head
Third-level headings are italicized to show emphasis.
Fourth-Level Head
The fourth-level heading uses underscored text and initial capitals.
Tables and Figures
Tables
Place table titles above the table, flush left to align with the left
margin of the table and highlight the title by using boldface type. Note
that the word "TABLE" should be in capital letters; use initial
capitals for the remaining words in the title. Number all tables in the
paper consecutively (using Arabic numerals) in the order in which they are
placed in the paper, or in the order the table is first cited in the text.
References to tables should be made by number at the appropriate place in
the text.
Give each column in the table a heading. Leave
a half line of space after the column heads and insert a rule that extends
across the full width of the table. Insert another half line of space and
full-width rule at the end of the table (and above the footnotes, if any).
Use lowercase italic superscript letters for footnotes in tables.

Figures
Embed (do not link to another file) all graphics in the electronic version
of your paper. Give each figure a caption. Place figure captions below the
figure, flush left to align with the left margin and highlight the caption
by using boldface type. Note that the word "FIGURE" should be
in capital letters; use sentence case for the remaining words in the caption
and end the caption with a period. Number figures consecutively in the order
first cited in the text, using Arabic numerals. Reference must be made to
each figure by number at the appropriate place in the text.
Ensure that each figure be clear and legible. The
type in published figures must not be too small to be readable.

REFERENCES
The reference list should contain only those references cited in the text, numbered in the order in which they are first cited. Denote a reference at the appropriate place in the text by an underlined or italicized Arabic numeral in parentheses, e.g., (2) or (2). Do not repeat a reference in the list and do not use ibid., idem., op. cit., or loc. cit. If a reference is cited more than one time in the text, repeat the number first assigned to the reference.
