Abstract : The strong enhancement of suprathermal ions and electrons are sometimes observed in magnetotail in association with reconnection events. We study the particle heating/acceleration processes in terms of Geotail observations and the particle-in-cell simulation of magnetic reconnection. We study first when and where the enhancement of energetic particles are observed in the magnetotail based on Geotail observations and discuss the dawn-dusk asymmetry of the energetic particles. Next we study how those energetic particle are produced by using the particle simulation. We find that several important steps involve in the energetic particle acceleration: Speiser/meandring acceleration in an elongated thin X-type region, the pitch-angle scattering of the strong waves generated by a strong Hall electric current, and the gradient B drift motion in the strong magnetic field region produced by piling up of magnetic field due to colliding of the fast reconnection flow with the preexisting plasma.
