Abstract : The dynamics of magnetospheric substorms exhibit a wide range of periodicities, from substorm recurrence time (several hours), to BBF recurrence time (~20 minutes) down to Pi2 pulsations (1-3 minutes). Studying the nature and source of these periodicities can yield important insights into magnetospheric dynamics. In this paper we examine two of these periodicities in particular. First, we study the discrete Pc5 frequency pulsations that have been observed both on the ground and in space, and which have been suggested as playing a role in recurrent activations. We suggest an external, solar wind source for these pulsations. Second, we examine periodicities associated with BBFs. These include the BBF recurrence time and oscillations of the flow peaks, which have been shown to drive low-latitude Pi2 pulsations. Finally, we place these observations in the context of the substorm problem.
