Track 3B: Field Training for Bridge Maintenance

This one-day field demonstration and applications course is for local and state bridge maintenance personnel. Participants learn the proper use of approved materials and BMPs for routine maintenance activities on or near bridges that pass over rivers, streams, and other waterways.

Outdoor course

Track 3B is conducted outdoors and participants will be involved in the installation of BMPs.

Please dress appropriately for these activities and come prepared for rain or extremes of temperature.

Topics covered in the course include:
Cleaning tools/methods
Containment
Street sweeping
Blocking drains and scuppers
Tarps (suspended below/beyond sides of bridge)
Ground traps
Funnel tarp (sloped to drain/reservoir/other disposal or containment)
Silt fence
Straw wattle
Triangular silt dikes
Sand bags/plastic
Use of nearby sanitary sewer
Vacuum

Bridge features discussed include scuppers, roadway surfaces including sidewalks, surface drains, the bridge superstructure (above & below deck), and the sideslope of the bridge approach.

Best professional judgment (BPJ) along with balancing labor versus BMP containment will be incorporated through lecture, discussion, and targeted field activities.

Continuing Education Units

Course participants will earn 0.6 CEUs upon successful completion of this course. The CEU is a nationally recognized measure of participation in a noncredit continuing education program that meets established criteria for increasing knowledge and competency.
