CSD-100 International Symposium

"Main Street America Meets Main Street Europe"

May 2-3, 2002
Seattle, Washington, USA

Proudly sponsored by AASHTO, FHWA, and the Washington State DOT

Register today!

Today, the design challenges facing highway professionals are more complex than ever. While safety and mobility will always be critical design criteria, factors such as preserving and enhancing the natural environment and improving the livability of our communities are increasingly more demanding.

Context Sensitive Design (CSD) has emerged to address these challenges. Under the auspices of the AASHTO-FHWA International Technology Exchange Program, US managers and engineers visited Denmark, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Sweden in June 2000. The Scan Team was so impressed with certain European practices that they decided to bring a piece of Europe back to you in this two day Symposium -- a Symposium designed especially for busy executives.

What will you hear?

You will learn how the Netherlands brings the community into the design process early and often; how the United Kingdom approaches key corridor decisions; how Denmark manages the "Beautiful Roads Programs"; and how Germany deals with small town history and traditions.

And more!! You will also hear about key US practices in Minnesota, Kentucky, and Washington.

And still more! You will board buses to tour several Seattle sites where CSD applications have dramatically improved community relations. Then, enjoy a cruise on Puget Sound to Blake Island and enjoy dinner with your colleagues.

Why should you come?
The symposium will help you:

  1. Get practical solutions through case study application of principles;
  2. Exchange information and assess future needs for more effective CSD;
  3. Network with your US peers on an important, emerging discipline; and
  4. Expand your CSD network to include international expertise.

Who is invited?
This symposium is targeted to DOT and FHWA executives and will be limited to the first 100 registrants.
This is the only Context Sensitive Design outreach effort that is aimed strictly at busy DOT, FHWA and design firm executives -- the CSD-100.
