Optional Pre-Conference Workshops

Student Workshop on Nanotechnology, Engineered Biomaterials and Biosensors
Wednesday, October 11, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Professor Viola Vogel will organize a tour of the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Washington. Students are invited to participate in the tour of facilities as well as in presentations about Nanotechnology, Engineered Biomaterials and Biosensors. The tour is limited to 50 students. There is no charge for students who are currently attending undergraduate or graduate programs.

The following two optional workshops scheduled for Wednesday, October 11, have been cancelled due to low enrollment. Refunds will be issued to persons who registered and paid for a workshop. We sincerely regret any inconvenience to conference participants.

IEEE and the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) will sponsor a training workshop for bioengineer-ing faculty who wish to learn the intricacies of ABET 2000. The workshop will teach faculty the details of the ABET criteria, how to apply them to bioengineering curricula and how to evaluate curricula in the light of the criteria. The workshop is limited to 50 participants, and costs $250. A continental breakfast and lunch are included.

FDA and Bioengineering Projects

Professors Vincent Pizziconi of Arizona State University and Deborah Koeneman of Orthologic have assembled a workshop on the successful advancement of bioengineer-ing projects through the Food and Drug Administration. The workshop provides an introduction to the FDA regulatory compliance process for the design and manufacture of medical devices. Topics include Quality Systems Regulations, FDA and ISO Design Controls, Human Factors Practices, Industry Case Studies: Implementing GMP/QS Regulations into Practice, and Incorporating Medical Device Regulations into the BME Design Curriculum. The workshop is targeted for prospective and practicing manufacturers of medical devices interested in how to implement QS regulations and for members of the BME academic community who want to incorporate medical device regulatory compliance into their design curricula. The workshop faculty will be comprised of representatives from the FDA Center for Devices and Radiological Health, Medical Device Manufacturers and BME Design Educators. The workshop is limited to 50 participants, and costs $250. A continental breakfast and lunch are included.
