The Rita Schaffer Memorial Lecture

Over 200 posters will be presented by leading researchers. Participants have a truly unique opportunity to discuss leading edge research one-on-one. Poster boards measure 4 feet high x 6 feet wide.

BMES Business Meeting & Awards
The BMES Business Meeting and award ceremony will be held on Friday, October 13 from 3:30-5 p.m.


Industrial Internships Workshop
A special workshop on Industrial Internships is scheduled for Saturday, October 14, from 4:00-5:30 p.m. (Session 10.6). Session Chair is Wolf W. von Maltzahn of The Whitaker Foundation. Speakers include Charla Triplet of Arizona State University, Lisa Waples of Marquette University, Geert Schmidt-Schonbein of University of California, San Diego and Eugene Eckstein of University of Memphis.


Historical Session
Thursday, October 12, Noon-2:00 pm, Cascade 11
The BMES 2000 special historical session will review the early history and use of the artificial kidney. The title of the presentation is "Bioengineering on the Firing Line: Hemodialysis in the 1960s and 1970s at the University of Washington-Clinical, Engineering, and Ethical Considerations in Delivering New Medical Technology." Presenters will include Paul Fagette, Christopher Blagg, Wayne Quinton, Rev. John Darrah and Belding Scribner.


Social Events

Welcome Reception
All registrants are cordially invited to attend an informal reception on Thursday evening, October 12. Relax and meet with old friends and new acquaintances and view poster presentations and exhibits.

Reception at the Pacific Science Center
Seattle's Pacific Science Center has been reserved for a special BMES 2000 reception on Friday evening, October 13. Explore science, mathematics and technology through hands-on and interactive exhibits and enjoy the opportunity to socialize with your colleagues. Continuous round-trip transportation will be provided. The Pacific Science Center is located on the grounds of the Seattle Center (former fairgrounds of the 1962 Seattle World's Fair) in the northern area of downtown Seattle. This event is complimentary with conference or guest registration.

Optional Event: Puget Sound Cruise and Salmon Dinner at Tillicum Village
An evening cruise and salmon barbecue dinner is scheduled for Saturday, October 14. The excursion boat will depart from the Seattle waterfront. Participants will enjoy a relaxing 45 minute cruise accross Elliott Bay to Tillicum Village on the shores of Blake Island. Tillicum Village offers a buffet dinner featuring fresh, Pacific salmon prepared on cedar stakes over an alder fire in the traditional method of the Northwest Coastal Tribes. Following dinner in the "longhouse" is a Native American dance performance. The return cruise highlights Seattle's nighttime skyline. Chartered buses will provide round-trip transportation between the hotel and the waterfront. Tickets: $60 each.
