Engineering Professional Programs

University of Washington Certificate Program
in Aircraft Composite Materials and Manufacturing

Sponsored by the University of Washington's Department of Materials Science and Engineering and Department of Mechanical Engineering, and The Boeing Company's Learning, Training and Development (LTD) organization.

Academic Credit and Continuing Education Unit Options

Students in this certificate program can earn either academic credit or Continuing Education Units (CEU’s), a nationally recognized measure of participation in a noncredit continuing education program. Under certain circumstances, students taking the courses for credit may use the credits toward a graduate degree at the University of Washington, provided that you obtain graduate status before beginning the course.

Advanced composite materials such as carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) are being applied to many aircraft structures including Boeing 787 to improve performance and save weight. To best prepare engineers with a broad knowledge of constituent materials used in polymer matrix composites (PMC), manufacturing and quality control techniques, and tooling and repair technology, the Boeing Learning, Training, and Development (LTD) group and the University of Washington have developed a certificate program in Aircraft Composite Materials and Manufacturing.

The certificate program consists of a series of tailored courses in materials, manufacturing and quality and tooling and repair, covering a wide spectrum of theoretical and practical developments in the field. To earn the certificate, participants must complete all three required courses. These certificate courses will be taught by UW faculty and subject matter experts from the aerospace industry.

Registration in Individual Courses

While priority will be given to certificate program participants, you may register for individual courses.

Prerequisites

To participate in the certificate program, students must have a B.S. in engineering, physics or chemistry. Coursework must be completed in order, beginning with Aircraft Composite Materials. You may request a waiver of this requirement if you have completed UW course MSE 475: Introduction to Composite Materials or an equivalent course at an institution of higher education. To request a waiver please contact Emily West.

For Course III, students must meet the following eligibility requirements:
U.S. or Canadian citizen and
Either a Boeing employee or an employee of a partner company with a current export compliance agreement in place.
