 Chairman's Welcome

On behalf of the Geo-Institute, it is my pleasure to invite you to attend the 1998 Specialty Conference on Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics, to be held on the University of Washington campus. We are looking forward to an outstanding program of technical sessions, exhibits, short courses, and social events.

The conference will revolve around a series of invited Emerging Art presentations by outstanding researchers and practitioners. These presentations will focus on developments in important areas of geotechnical engineering practice in the past 10 years, and on anticipated developments in the next 10 years. The program will also feature 27 additional technical sessions, including more than 100 contributed presentations. Four short courses covering topics such as soil improvement, seismic design of landfills, geophysical site characterization, and seismic design of retaining structures are also planned. Exhibits and geotechnical software demonstration sessions will allow the participants to obtain information on new techniques and technologies.

A gala reception and optional evening activities cap off the social events. The reception will be held on campus in the Husky Union Building, overlooking Lake Washington and with a view of Mt. Rainier. Other activities will include a major leagure baseball game (Mariners vs. Red Sox) and a Puget Sound dinner cruise.

The accompanying guests and spouses will also have an opportunity to explore Seattle during the day. Scheduled tours of Seattle plus a winery tour are planned. There are numerous opportunities for shopping and dining, and the Seattle area boasts unsurpassed outdoor recreational opportunities. You'll find Seattle (the Emerald City) is a true gem with long, dry August evenings. Please feel free to explore our home page for up-to-date information on the conference.

Our outstanding technical program and the opportunity to meet with many colleagues from all over the world are just two reasons we hope to see you in Seattle.
