EDGE

On-Campus Students

In the process of developing materials for distance-learning students, EDGE regularly creates resources that can benefit on-campus students.

Enrolling as an EDGE Student

The best way to receive help from the EDGE Program is to enroll in the EDGE section of a course. This is the answer for students who normally register in on-campus sections of courses, but who cannot attend the classroom session due to a co-op assignment or other personal reason. Transferring to EDGE status can be done on a single course basis, or for an entire quarter. In addition to the online resources we normally make available to on-campus students, you will benefit from the following services:

Because we're a self-sustaining program in the University, our tuition structure is different from the on-campus rate. Click here for more information. This tuition is assessed separately from your normal student account, and is based only on the number of credits taken as an EDGE student. You will receive an invoice for the full amount after the second week of the quarter.

Although credits earned through EDGE appear on your transcript and count toward your degree as usual, they do not count toward full-time on-campus status. In other words, if you need to maintain full-time status (currently 10 credits for graduate students) for insurance, loan or assistantship purposes, the credits earned through EDGE will not count toward that requirement.

To transfer to EDGE status, complete the "Petition to Transfer Transfer between EDGE and On-Campus" form. Your department advising staff and the EDGE Students Services Manager must sign this form. When registering for your course, do so by completing the EDGE enrollment form.

Resources for Students Enrolled in On-Campus Courses

EDGE also provides limited support for students in on-campus sections.

Video

EDGE distributes several forms of video to reach the widest possible audience:

Streaming Video: Each course has a Streaming Video page with links to lectures throughout the quarter. Microsoft Windows Media Player and an Internet connection of 56 Kbps or greater is required. We are not able to provide technical support to on-campus students at this time.

Course Web Sites

In cases where the instructor of a course does not maintain his or her own web site, EDGE will create one. These sites provide access to announcements, handouts, assignments, online discussion boards, and streaming video. Click here to learn more about courses being offered this quarter.

Passwords

We create passwords for all online materials we maintain, unless the instructor specifically requests otherwise. The EDGE office cannot give out course passwords to on-campus students. The instructor is informed of the password and will share it with the on-campus students if he or she decides to do so. Students with questions about the password should contact their professor.

A Word about Schedule Conflicts

Some on-campus students have attempted to resolve schedule conflicts by enrolling in two courses scheduled for the same time and relying on our resources to keep up in one or both courses. We strongly discourage this "double-booking" of classes, unless you obtain permission from both instructors and formally enroll as an EDGE student. See "Enrolling as an EDGE Student" above.
