UW/EDGE How to Apply

Found on this page:

Read the following information carefully for deadline dates and requirements. Please contact the EDGE office with any questions.

Student Status Options:

Students participating through EDGE may choose between three student status options:

MS
The matriculated student has received full admission to the graduate program and is earning credits toward the Master's Degree.
GNM
The Graduate Nonmatriculated student has received admission as a "Graduate Non-Matriculated" (GNM) student. A GNM student is not presently seeking a degree but may apply a maximum of 12 graduate level credits toward degree requirements should he or she be accepted into a graduate program. It is important to note that acceptance as a GNM student does not imply admission to a graduate degree program.
NM

"Non-Matriculated" students may enroll in certain courses with the permission of the instructor and the academic department. Prerequisite knowledge needed for the course is required. Credits earned under NM status may not be transferred to a Master's Degree program. See the Non-Matriculated Students section toward the bottom of this page for details on obtaining permission and registering.

How to Apply

Applications for Matriculated (Graduate) status and for Graduate Non-Matriculated status are submitted electronically through the graduate school at https://www.grad.washington.edu/applForAdmiss/ (approvals for Non-Matriculated status are handled separately—see the Non-Matriculated Students section toward the bottom of this page for details). Once there, you will need to create a new applicant profile, select your application type (Graduate or Graduate Non-Matriculated), and choose the graduate program. When selecting your program, be sure to choose the one designated as “EDGE”.

The application packet varies based on whether you apply for MS or GNM status. The following materials are required; see the online application for complete details:

  MS GNM
Application Form
Two Sets of Official Transcripts
GRE Scores

Statement of Purpose

Letters of Recommendation ( 3 for Mechanical Engineering & Manufacturing Engineering; 2 for Aeronautics and Astronautics & Aerospace Engineering )

$50 Application Fee (can be paid online with application)

Graduate Record Exam (GRE)

- The Graduate School requires MS applicants to take the general portion of the Graduate Record Examination. Information is available on the Web at: www.gre.org, or through the Educational Testing Service, Box 955, Princeton, NJ 08540-6000. Although the departments do not have minimum GRE scores, the typical successful applicant has scores in excess of: 450 Verbal, 700 Quantitative, 650 Analytical. The GRE is not required for GNM or NM students.

Statement of Purpose

- A one page statement by student indicating how your academic and professional backgrounds make you a good candidate for your chosen program.

Letters of Recommendation

- Letters of recommendation can be from professional and academic contacts.

Non-Matriculated Students:

If you would like to enroll in a single course for information purposes only, and you do not plan to apply the credits you earn toward a degree in the future, you may register as a Nonmatriculated (NM) student through UW Extension. Prerequisite knowledge needed for the course is required, and approval must be obtained from the instructor and academic department.

Follow these steps to apply and register:

1) To request instructor and departmental approval, complete the Non-Matriculated Student Registration Approval Form (the form is a PDF file; downloading it requires Adobe Reader) and email it as an attachment to the course instructor and the academic department.

2) Once you’ve received approval from the instructor and department, complete the Non-Matriculated Student Registration Form (the form is a PDF file; downloading it requires Adobe Reader).

3) Forward all materials to UW Extension’s Registration Services Department. This can be done by email or by mailing/faxing/delivering hard copies of materials. All materials need to be submitted together. This includes:

Instructor approval
Department approval
Non-Matriculated Student Registration Approval Form
Non-Matriculated Student Registration Form
Third-Party Payer Agreement or Boeing Voucher (if applicable)

4) Once your registration has been processed, you will receive a transaction summary in the mail that includes your course information and student number. If you do not receive a transaction summary, please contact Registration Services at 800.506.1325 or 206.543.2310 or uweoreg@extn.washington.edu.
