Global Alliance for Diversifying the Science and Engineering Workforce

CWD is one of the co-directors of the Global Alliance for Diversifying the Workforce in Science and Engineering . CWD partners with the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the Association for Women in Science (AWIS), and Women in Engineering Programs & Advocates Network (WEPAN) to create and expand this global network of organizations committed to diversifying the workforce. The Global Alliance conducts research on best practices, and develops short courses and seminars for large corporations, governments, and universities trying to offer workplaces that enhance recruitment, retention, and advancement of their employees.

Current and recent activities headed by the Global Alliance include:

  • African Women in Engineering and Science - Sponsored by the Engineering Information Foundation, this web site is the compilation of research examining the challenges women in Egypt, Mali, and Nigeria face when deciding to pursue science or engineering as a profession.


  • Expert Panel Meeting on Women and Gender Issues in Engineering, Science and Technology – CO-hosted with UNESCO in December 2002 at the UNESCO offices in Paris, France. Representatives from six African nations, the US, France, and United Nations came together to discuss next steps for advancing an agenda of increasing women’s participation in STEM professions, leadership, and policy-making.


  • US-Sweden Joint Gender Equity Research – a bilateral initiative between Swedish and American corporations, professional associations, and institutions of higher education to learn more about what each country is doing to promote diversity in the STEM workforce. Conduct workings sessions every two years.


  • Corporate Diversity Practices Clearinghouse – Ongoing research to identify specific programs, policies, and strategies in high-tech corporations to promote diversity in the workforce.


  • World Engineer’s Convention, International Forum on Women in Engineering & Science – The World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) and the Global Alliance hosted the International Forum on Women & Engineering in Science, held in Shanghai, China, in 2004.
