Web Site Access and Support

Hosting

The College of Engineering Computing Services department operates the “www.engr.washington.edu” web server, which hosts the College of Engineering's main web site.

Departmental web sites are typically hosted on departmental web servers or the central UW web server (http://dept.washington.edu). COE Computing Services does not offer support or services for those systems. There is no prohibition, however, against a department choosing to host its site on the College web server.

COE Computing Services offers the following services with regards to the College web server:

Content Ownership

The content (text, images, formatting, etc.) of individual web pages on the College web server is considered to be "owned" by the appropriate business unit of the College, which assumes responsibility for maintaining its currency. Computing Services does not offer assistance editing content on College web pages insofar as the assistance is not related to the above services.

User Accounts

Computing Services must receive an employee's supervisor's approval to establish an account for the employee to access and edit web pages.

Access is granted on a directory-basis. In requesting access, users should specify which directories they need to access. No access will be granted to the "root" level of the server.

Support for Dreamweaver

Support for Dreamweaver is limited to installation and initial configuration only. The UW offers courses in the use of Dreamweaver via its Computer Training program. Extensive documentation on using the approved COE Dreamweaver templates is also available for download.

Note: Users supported by COE Computing Services don't need to download any of these templates; access to the templates will come with your Dreamweaver configuration.

Supported Technologies

The COE web site runs Apache and supports PHP and SHTML. SSIs (server-side includes) are supported on standard ".html" files. See Apache's web site for more informaiton on using SSI directives.

We support pubcookie for UW NetID authentication. See C&C's pubcookie resource page for information on password-protecting a directory with pubcookie.

We provide the FormMail script to send the results of web forms on the www.engr.washington.edu server via e-mail to a specified recipient. To use FormMail, set a form's "action" attribute to "/cgi-bin/FormMail.cgi" and insert a hidden form field named "recipient" with its value set to the intended recipient's email address. There is a MySQL database server available; contact webhelp@engr.washington.edu to inquire about database access.

We do not support ASP, ASP.NET, or FrontPage extensions.
