First time installation of Mathematica

Mathematica can be downloaded from the web server: http://www.engr.washington.edu/computing/software/dist/mathematica/

The site requires you to enter your UWnetid and password.

UNIX systems

For SunOS/Solaris, HP Tru64, Unix, HP-UX,IBM AIX and Linux alpha systems.

You will need at least 650MB of free space to download and uncompress the installation archive. This does not include whatever disk space you will need for the actual installation. Installation must be done as a user with privileges to install files and programs.

Download mathematica5-unix.tgz

Uncompress the archive with the following command:

tar -xzf mathematica5-unix.tgz

This will create a directory named "mathematica5". Go to the Installer directory:

cd mathematica5/Installer

Run the installer program:

./MathInstaller

Follow the on-screen instructions

Please see:
http://elms10.e-academy.com/uware/
to obtain the UW License number for Mathematica.
You will need the UW License number and the MathID from your install of Mathematica in order to register Mathematica on the Wolfram web site

Linux (x86) systems

You will need at least 400MB of free space to download and uncompress the installation archive. This does not include whatever disk space you will need for the actual installation. Installation must be done as a user with privileges to install files and programs.

Download mathematica5-linux.tgz

Uncompress the archive with the following command:

Macintosh systems (MacOS X)

You will need at least 425MB of free space to download and install Mathematica 5. Installation must be done as a user with privileges to install files and programs.

Download mathematica5-macosx.dmg

Locate the mathematica5-macosx.dmg file in the Finder, and double-click the file to open it.

Disk Copy will launch, and mount the disk image on your Desktop as "Mathematica 5.0".

Double-click on the "Mathematica 5.0" icon on your Desktop to open it, if it isn't already open.

Windows (98/ME/NT/2000/XP) systems

You will need at least 450MB of free space to download and uncompress the installation archive. This does not include whatever disk space you will need for the actual installation. Installation must be done as a user with privileges to install files and programs.

Download mathematica52-win.zip

Locate the file that you just downloaded, and double-click the file to uncompress the archive. When asked for a directory location, select where you'd like the install files to be placed. This will create a "mathematica5" folder in the location you select.

Open the "mathematica5" folder you just created, and double-click "install.bat" file (it may display as "install"). The Mathematica installer will start.

Follow the on-screen instructions.

Please see:

You will need the UW License number and the MathID from your install of Mathematica in order to register Mathematica on the Wolfram web site

Execute the install.bat installation program located in the ...\mathematica5-windows folder. Once the Mathematica installation program starts it will display the following:

Select the Install Mathematica to a hard disk option

Choose one of the following installation options.

  • Full. Installs Mathematica with all related files.
  • Minimal. Installs the minimum required files to run Mathematica.

Click Browse to choose another installation directory, if desired. Make sure that the directory you are browsing to is not hidden.

Click Install when you are ready to begin copying files.

Once all the files are copied to your hard drive, a license information dialog box appears. Click the radio button marked Enter license information now. Then click Finish.

If you choose to enter the license information later, the installer will quit without launching Mathematica. To launch Mathematica, click Start, Programs, Mathematica 5.

Mathematica starts up and a dialog box appears. Click the radio button marked Single Machine. You'll need to enter/confirm the Name and Organization information and enter the UW Mathematica License ID.

If you choose to enter the license information later, Mathematica will run in MathReader mode. In this mode you cannot create or edit notebooks, but you can view and print them.

Click OK when you are done.

At this point in the installation, Mathematica will display a dialogue box similar to the one at the right with the MathID for your system.

If you've already received a current Mathematica Password from Wolfram you can enter it now. The password will be a number in the form "xxxx-xxx-xxx:x:x:xxxxxxxx". If you don't have a current password you can see the License request/renewal section below. You may also continue the installation process without a password and enter it later once Mathematica has been installed.

MathLM(Mathematica License Manager)

The latest version of Mathematica License Manager can be downloaded from the web server: http://www.engr.washington.edu/computing/software/

The site requires you to enter your UWnetid and password.

Unix:
Download mathlm-unix.tgz

Linux:
Download mathlm-linux.tgz

MacOSX:
Download mathlm-mac.tgz

Windows:
Download mathlm-win.zip

License request/renewal

After installation, starting the program will provide the MathID which can then be used to request the password.
If you have obtained your MathID then please go to the Wolfram web site to register your copy of Mathematica. A password will be sent to you via email.

Mathematica passwords will only be sent to "washington.edu" addresses.

If you are renewing your password, the required MathID can be retrieved by renaming all files called "mathpass" on your computer and starting Mathematica. The mathpass location for your machine is described in http://support.wolfram.com/mathematica/passwords/mathpasslocation.html. The mathid will be presented in a dialog box and you can then use it to request your new password.
Go to the Wolfram web site to register your copy of Mathematica. A password will be sent to you via email.

Mathematica passwords will only be sent to "washington.edu" addresses.

Wolfram Technical support

To receive technical support for Mathematica, go to http://register.wolfram.com/ and enter the UW license number. You can then choose "I want to register for technical support" and sign up to receive support directly from Wolfram in the use of Mathematica.
