System Security Checklist

Prior to joining the College of Engineering's Active Directory domain, each computer running Microsoft Windows must be reviewed to ensure that it meets the minimum security standards outlined in this document. A system that fails to meet any of the following checks may not join the domain.

This checklist was derived from the "UW Guidelines for Implementing Systems and Data Security Practices" and is intended to enforce compliance with the "UW Information Systems Security Policy" (UW-APS 2.1.7).

The checklist may be printed and completed for individual systems or for a group of systems provided all systems in the group meet the specified conditions.

The system is running Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2.

Other Windows operating systems or service pack levels are not permitted to join the domain.

Windows XP Home Edition cannot be a domain member and is not supported.

The system is running a current version of anti-virus software

The UW provides McAfee VirusScan free of charge

The anti-virus software is set to automatically receive updated virus definition files

A guide for configuring VirusScan is available

A full virus scan of the system with the latest virus definitions has revealed no infected files

The Windows Update service indicates that no critical security patches are required

Using Internet Explorer, go to: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and follow directions.

System scans by one or more anti-spyware applications reveals no malicious or suspicious code on the system (using at least two tools is recommended)

Free options include:

The system is not running any of the following Windows Services

All systems that I wish to join to the College of Engineering domain have been reviewed and have been found to be in compliance with the security standards listed above.
