Scholarship on Learning Engineering

The primary goal of the Scholarship on Learning (SoL) element is to conduct research on the engineering student learning experience in order to provide a comprehensive account--across diverse student populations and environments--of how people become engineers. To that end the team is conducting in-depth longitudinal studies of engineering students' educational experiences and transitions to the workplace. The emphasis is on the challenges students face and how they handle those challenges. These longitudinal studies (referred to as the Academic Pathways Study or APS) were followed up with the Academic Pathways of People Learning Engineering (APPLE) survey of students at a broader set of national institutions in spring 2008. The SoL element is also conducting a set of "targeted studies" to investigate core components of engineering knowledge and practice.
