The program emphasizes the application of mathematics, chemistry, and engineering to the pulp and paper industry.
The pulp and paper industry is one of the ten largest and most stable industries in the U.S. Its products are essential to the comfort and convenience of every citizen and are in constantly growing demand. Trees that provide the fiber for paper products are renewable, and the industry is constantly searching for improved ways to use this raw material to the fullest extent.
A broad range of challenging and rewarding career opportunities is available for men and women trained as scientists and engineers in the pulp, paper and in related chemical and engineering companies. The industry employees about 2,000 new graduates annually, including nearly 300 from paper science and engineering programs. Graduates from the Paper Science and Engineering program at the University of Washington are located in 18 states and have starting salaries that are highly competitive. The choice of work covers a wide spectrum. Graduates are placed in management, research, engineering, marketing, and production. Positions include process engineering, product development engineering, technical service engineering, and quality control.
