Honors Program

Overview

The College of Engineering Honors Program offers outstanding students a course of study designed to provide intellectual challenges in a stimulating learning atmosphere drawing on the resources of a large, diversified University. Students entering the Honors Program become candidates for the degree "With College Honors" or "With Distinction".

The Engineering Honors Program is administered by the Engineering Advising & Diversity Center, which is located in Room 301 of Loew Hall. Additionally, each department in the College of Engineering with an approved Honors degree track has a designated undergraduate advisor to serve as the Departmental Honors Advisor. This Honors advisor provides counsel and information to Honors students in that major. More information (including Requirement Information) on the College of Engineering Honors Program may be obtained from the engineering department or E-Center office in Loew 301.

If you are interested in the Engineering Honors Program and you have been admitted to a department, please speak with your department honors adviser or contact Dave Drischell in Engineering Advising & Diversity Center, Loew 301, 206/543-1770.

Freshmen who wish to participate in the Honors Program as pre-engineering students should do so through the University Honors Program Office located in Mary Gates Hall 211, uwhonors@u.washington.edu

Baccalaureate Honors (2003-04)

Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, Summa Cum Laude

Baccalaureate honors are awarded upon graduation to undergraduates earning their first bachelor's degree with at least 90 UW credits, of which at least 60 are numerically graded. Please note: courses not calculated into the UW gpa are not included in the 90 UW credit requirement.

The top one-half percent (.5%) of the graduating students in each college are designated summa cum laude (with highest praise), the next three percent (3%) are designated magna cum laude (with great praise), and the next six and one-half percent (6.5%) are designated cum laude (with praise). These students represent the top ten percent of the students graduating in each college.

Baccalaureate Honors have no relationship with enrollment in the University Honors Program; and unlike the invitation to join Phi Beta Kappa, do not require any particular distribution of credits. In addition, students who have earned quarterly and/or annual Dean's List recognition do not necessarily qualify for Baccalaureate Honors.

Graduates earning Baccalaureate Honors may wear an honor cord in the Commencement Ceremony. For students graduating in Spring Quarter, the honors listed in the Commencement Bulletin, as well as honor cord distribution, are based upon a student's cumulative GPA at the end of Winter Quarter, since Spring Quarter grades are not available. Spring classes are ultimately included in the credit totals and GPA calculations for honors posted to the student's final record.

Any questions or problems concerning Baccalaureate Honors should be directed to the Graduation and Academic Records Office, 543-1803.
