General Information
Students who wish to study engineering at the UW must apply and be accepted to both the University and the engineering department(s) of interest. Being admitted to the UW does not imply being admitted to an engineering department.
Incoming Freshmen apply to the University of Washington and spend their first one to three years as pre-engineering majors. After completing all prerequisite courses students apply for admission to one or more engineering programs.
Transfer Students apply to the UW after completing engineering admission requirements. Transfer students who have not yet completed these courses can be admitted to the UW as pre-engineering majors, particularly if prerequisite courses are not offered at their other school. Once prerequisites have been met the student may apply to the major(s) of his or her choice.
Note: Application deadlines vary for general admission and admission to engineering departments (check deadlines below).

Engineering Department Admissions
Upon completion of the prerequisite courses for an engineering departmental program, students may apply for entry into that program. To apply, an engineering departmental program application form (online) and transcripts must be submitted to ALL engineering department(s) to which you are applying.
The engineering online application for admission is available via the web. If you need assistance in filling out the application, please contact an adviser in the Engineering Engineering Advising & Diversity Center Office at 206-543-1770.
Applicants who are University of Washington students are considered at the same time as transfer applicants. The criteria by which applicants are judged vary from department to department, but are based in part on the GPA earned in prerequisite courses. For more information, please contact the Engineering Advising and Student Center at 206-543-1770.
Engineering Application Deadlines
| Autumn Quarter | July 1 | All departments admit students Autumn Quarter |
| Winter Quarter | See an Advisor | Paper Science & Engineering admit students Winter Quarter (see an advisor). All other departments DO NOT ADMIT students Winter Quarter. |
| Spring Quarter | February 1 | Bioengineering, Computer, Electrical, Industrial, Materials Science, Paper Science, and Technical Communication admit students Spring Quarter. The following departments DO NOT ADMIT students Spring Quarter: Aeronautics and Astronautics, Civil & Environmental, Chemical, and Mechanical Engineering. |
| Summer Quarter | N/A | No Departments admit students Summer Quarter |
Early Admission to Engineering
(Applicable for Autumn Quarter Only)
All departments, with the exception of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Computer Engineering, offer an early admission option. To be considered for early admission, applicants must be currently enrolled at the UW and have completed all early admission prerequisite courses prior to the July 1 application deadline.
To be considered for early admission, the following courses must be completed prior to the application deadline with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher. At least 15 credits of the prerequisite courses must be completed at the University of Washington.
- 15 credits of mathematics at the level of MATH 124, 125, & 126 (Calculus 1, 2, 3) or equivalent.
- A minimum of 10 credits of physical science courses plus accompanying lab selected from PHYS 121/121Z, 122/122Z, 123/123Z (calculus based physics) or CHEM 142, 152 (General Chemistry 1, 2). Chemical Engineering requires completion of CHEM 142, 152, 162 and PHYS 121/121Z. Bioengineering requires completion of CHEM 142, 152, and 162.
- 5 credits of English composition.
Upper-Division Admission to Engineering
Applicants who do not satisfy early admission requirements must apply under the upper-division requirements. For admission requirements for Interdisciplinary BS/BSE, contact Engineering Advising & Diversity Center at 206-543-1770.
Minimum GPA Requirements
In addition to course requirements, there are minimum GPA requirements for application to the engineering programs. The minimum GPA requirements are listed below. Please note the GPAs listed are minimums only. In reality, the average GPA of those offered admission is much higher. For additional information on the degree of competitiveness to a specific engineering program, click here for a listing of admission statements provided by each program.
