This webpage contains FAQs, announcements (by symposium year), and resources related to WEBS.
- Do I have to have already completed my Ph.D. before applying?
Given WEBS's focus on addressing the critical transition period from graduate studies and post-doctoral positions to permanent research and teaching positions, priority will be given to women who have earned their doctoral degrees within the past two to eight years and who do not have tenure.
- What topics will be addressed at the symposium?

Please note that this symposium is not designed to address issues related to applying and interviewing for jobs, although some of the symposium panels and discussion might indirectly touch on these subjects. Those who are specifically interested in gaining these skills, should check out other ADVANCE-related workshops such as
- Will you have childcare available at the symposium?
- How much does the symposium cost?
We understand that childcare is likely to be an issue for some participants. Unfortunately, we are not able to provide childcare at WEBS or to support family traveling with participants and speakers. Our experience from WEBS 2007 made it clear that it would be very difficult for participants to take full advantage of the WEBS experience if children or other family members attend. As we are not able to provide support for people bringing young infants who are nursing, we will encourage applicants with young children to apply in a subsequent year.
- Are there travel funds available?
Limited travel funding may be available. Please check back later for more information.
- How far is the Pack Forest Conference Center from Sea-Tac Airport?
The symposium site is about 50 miles south of the Sea-Tac Airport. Visit http://www.packforest.org/about/contact.htm for directions to the conference location.
WEBS hopes to offer a shuttle services from the airport to the conference center. If offered, the shuttle service will have very limited availability (1 trip from the aiport to the conference site and 1 trip returning to the airport at the end of the conference). Please check back later for more details.
- How is WEBS funded? And how long is the funding?
WEBS is funded through a grant from the National Science Foundation's ADVANCE program through October 2009. For more information about ADVANCE, visit the NSF ADVANCE website.
WEBS has also received some supplemental funding from various organizations and institutions. Please visit our Sponsors and Supporters page for a listing of these organizations.
- How many symposiums will be offered?
Currently, WEBS plans to offer 3 annual symposiums. The first symposium will be in October 2007.
- Can I participate if I am not at a U.S.-based institution but am a U.S. citizen?
This program is intended to address the science and engineering workforce needs in the U.S., hence symposium participants should be at U.S.-based institutions. However, US citizens that are temporarily overseas with the intention of returning to a US institution can apply, but are advised that it is unlikely that WEBS will be able to cover travel costs.
- How many applicants will be selected to participate?
WEBS estimates selecting approximately 30 women to participate in each symposium.
- What is the participant selection strategy ?
The participant selection strategy is outline on the application wepage.
- When will I know if I have been selected to participate?
WEBS intends to notify applicants before the end of July if they have been selected to participate in the October symposium.
The symposium costs (lodging and meals) will be covered by the NSF grant and other funding sources. No registration fee will be charged. Participants will be responsible for travel expenses.

2010 Location: Pack Forest Conference Center.(Washington State)
Cost: Free. Participants will be responsible for travel to the conference. All on-site expenses will be covered by WEBS.

Travel and Transportation information for 2008 symposium
WEBS will be providing limited transportation to and from Sea-Tac Airport and the Pack Forest Conference Center. The last WEBS shuttle willl leave Sea-Tac airport at 12:30 pm on October 19, 2008. The WEBS shuttles will return to Sea-Tac airport by 5:30 pm on October 12, 2008.
If you plan to arrange your own ground transportation to the conference site, the estimated travel time for Sea-Tac Airport to Pack Forest Conference Center is 1.5 hours (travel distance is 51 miles). Driving directions can be found online at http://www.packforest.org/about/contact.htm. Note that the airport is North of the conference site.
Final Logistical Details for 2008 Participants and Speakers
Packing tips: we will be staying at the Pack Forest conference center, south of Seattle, WA.Participants will be sharing rooms in a dormitory style setting and the bathrooms will be located near your rooms. Please pack accordingly.
Bedding and linens will be provided. Dress will be casual. Please check the Eatonville, WA weather forecast (http://www.weather.com/outlook/recreation/outdoors/local/98328) to see if rain is likely, as we will be moving between different buildings throughout the symposium.
Participant Poster: All participants (excluding speakers) should bring a poster that describes her research interests. It should be 2 ft wide and 3 ft high. Include your name and institution. This is meant to get discussion going more than to showcase particular results.
Shuttles to/from Pack Forest: There are three shuttles driving from SEATAC to Pack Forest. Space on the shuttles is limited, so please take the shuttle to which you are assigned.
Collect your bags and meet your shuttle driver at international baggage claim pick up location on far end of the baggage claim, beyond baggage claim carousel 1. Please CALL YOUR SHUTTLE DRIVER if there are any changes in your itinerary during your trip.
Lunch on Oct 19: We will NOT be providing lunch on Sunday Oct 19. Please pack a lunch or purchase one at the airport when you arrive, as the shuttle will be driving directly to Pack Forest on Sun Oct 19. There will be snacks available during registration and poster hanging when you arrive at Pack Forest.

There is cell phone reception at Pack Forest, however, it depends on the carrier. The main WEBS contact number at Pack Forest is: 206-200-6649 (Joyce Yen). (Please note this cell phone number will only be in use October 18-22, 2008). If you cannot reach us by cell phone, please contact us through the Pack Forest Conference Center during business hours: 206-685-4485 ext. 207 or 227.
Internet Access: There will be a workstation at Pack Forest where you can check your email in between session. Also, we have arranged with the PackForest conference center to allow personal access to the internet based on an individual fee basis. If you would like to use this service, you need to go to the Pack Forest conference center office on Monday during one of the breaks and set up an account. The estimated cost is $3/day. Ethernet ports will be available in McBride 106, the same room that we will have a computer set up for shared use. You will need to bring your own ethernet cable.
Dietary Restrictions: If you expressed some dietary restrictions, the Pack Forest Conference folks have asked that you identify yourself at each meal so they will be sure to be able to accommodate you. We have already notified them of the various dietary restrictions of our participants and speakers.

Packing tips

Dress will be casual. As symposium activities will be moving between different buildings, please check the Eatonville, WA weather forecast to see if rain is likely.
Participant Research Poster
Participants should remember to bring a 2 ft wide by 3 ft high poster that describes her research interests. The poster should include participant's name and institution. These posters are meant to spark discussion more than to showcase particular results.
Shuttles to/from Pack Forest
WEBS has three shuttles driving from SEATAC airport to Pack Forest. A list of shuttle assignments is available here. If the travel information is not correct, please let us know ASAP (email websinfo@u.washington.edu). Space on the shuttles is limited, so please take the shuttle to which you are assigned.
Shuttle riders should collect their bags and meet their assigned shuttle driver at the international baggage claim pick up location on far end of the baggage claim, beyond baggage claim carousel 1.
